The front cut-out
As I mentioned earlier, the front panel lyrics design did not quite work out, as I realised that I wanted something a bit cleaner.
So instead, I decided to combine a couple more symbols from the comic and make a logo (with a bit of help from my girlfriend) which would be cut out in two different layers of the front panel.
After the design was finalised, I cut it out to size and put it on the front to check the placement. The design would also feature one of my favourite lines from the song “Three Evils”:
“Pull the trigger and the nightmare stops…”
It's a little morbid, I know, but it certainly fits the theme!
To achieve the layered look and to match the new aluminium that I would soon be putting on top, I ripped off the acrylic on the front (attached with more of that very feisty double-stick tape) and cut out a new piece of the same 2mm AC Ryan aluminium to go in its place.
I cut the entire design out of the black, but only cut the numerals out of the silver door behind it. This created a very nice layered effect and gave the front more depth. To top it off, I cut out another piece of the red acrylic and put that behind both layers.
Painting
I originally was going to etch the writing directly into the aluminium using my Dremel – but upon noticing that my skills were quite lacking for such a task, I rethought it out and came up with this solution.
First, I taped over the area and added a printout of the writing. After that, I cut out the letters carefully with a hobby knife, then finally peeled off the tape where the letters were cut out.
This left a perfect template for the letters, so I just painted a dark red over the area and peeled off the tape. I repeated this technique for the top panel as well.
